Do you have a good relationship with money? How do you treat or treasure it? How often do you enjoy it? Do you improve it? Do you flirt, cheat or have a steady relationship? How do you see your money? Do you see it as a thing, a tool or a person?

Create a Relationship Plan or Goal

Let’s look at the importance of planning. Do you make it a priority to plan for your money? Do you have a stable relationship with money or does it flirt in and out of your life without warning? How much do you care about and do you take care of your money as a thing, a tool or a person? Do you keep it in a safe place? Do you sharpen it every now and then, do you talk to it or tell it what to do? Do you listen to it? How do you treat it? Describe your relationship with your money? Maybe it’s time to change or improve your relationship!

In this article we want to help you by teaching the principles from the Bible regarding money. We often quote the love of  money is the root of all evil 1 Timothy 6:10. But the issue here was the means by which we attain money. Are we operating outside of biblical principles to gain money? Have we left the faith to get more money? Is there some sort of compromise in our money making lifestyle?

Ecclesiastes 10:19 says money answers all things. What does that really mean in context? How do we find balance between these two verses. One says the love of money is the root of all evil and the other says it is an answer to all things. It is from the latter verse that we can conclude that money is a metaphorical person. If you have it, you have influence and resources. How you get it and how you use it, really boils down to who you are morally and spiritually.  See it as a person. If you are a selfish person, you will be selfish with money. If you are a giving person, you will do more philanthropy with money. You have the power to decide what you do with your money relationship.

One does not have to have a lot of money to begin a healthy relationship with money. One just has to know the right principles and use them. Here is a list of money principles that you can use in your relationship.

  • Do it right and grow it!Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. Proverbs 13:11 NIV.
  • Make a Plan and use it, don’t fall for get rich quick schemes. Proverbs 21:5 – The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
  • Set systems of work or investments in place to produce money first. Proverbs 24:27 – Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.
  • Create a budget. Luke 14:28-30 – Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, “This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.”
  • Set aside an emergency fund. Genesis 41:34-36 – Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.
  • Avoid debt that doesn’t give financial freedom. Proverbs 22:7 – The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
  • Create multiple streams of income.  Ecclesiastes 11:2 – Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
