Rebounds are divided into two main categories: “offensive rebounds”, in which the ball is
recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and “defensive rebounds,”
in which the defending team gains possession. A majority of rebounds are defensive
because the team on defense tends to be in better position (in other words, closer to the
basket) to recover missed shots. Offensive rebounds lead to another opportunity to score
for the offensive team, either right away or by resetting the offense.“
A rebound in basketball is the act of successfully gaining possession of the
basketball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a routine part
in the game, as all possessions change after a shot is successfully made”. Wikipedia defines
and further explains the following about rebounds.
Rebounds are credited to the first player that gains clear possession of the ball or to a player
that successfully deflects the ball into the basket for a score. There are many attributes
characteristic of great rebounders; the most common are height and strength.
Because height is so important, most rebounds are made by centers and power forwards.
However, some smaller players can be excellent rebounders; for example Jason Kidd, point
guard for the Dallas Mavericks, led the New Jersey Nets in rebounding for several years.
Great rebounders must also have a keen sense of timing. Great leaping ability is also an
asset, but not necessary. Players such as Larry Bird and Bobby Jones were good rebounders,
but never known for their leaping ability. (Bird has been quoted as saying “Most rebounds
are taken below the rim. That’s where I get mine.”
As I watched my son Stefan play his favorite ball game, I saw an energy and passion for
rebounds that provoked the title for this article and ultimately my book. I would watch him
time and time again use his advantage of height and strength to bring devastation to the
opposing team. His strength on the court is phenomenal. But how do these factors apply to
success in everyday life?
Firstly, possession of the gift, talent or passion that can clearly give you that winning edge is
essential to your ultimate success. Or through deflection, one can use an opportunity that is
clearly out of one’s hand or reach to score points or to mount a platform to achieve desired
success.
Using the physical attributes you possess whether height, strength, or the contrary, to
position you for greatness. Whether you have the ideal physical attributes or not should not
be limitations to you rebounding to success. Use what you have!
A great sense of timing is key to achieving success. Timing is critical to every opportunity
gained in life. There is that exact moment where the nut and bolt collides and it is the
seizing of that perfect opportunity that literally paves the way for unparalleled success.
Leaping from our various platforms in life and catapulting to spaces and horizons way
beyond our natural reach can be a tremendous force which displaces normalcy in our lives
and transforms it to extraordinary. Where ever you may be in the game of life, you can
rebound to success.
Ephesians 3:20 says “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us”.
